Regulation & compliance

Licensed security protects you too.

In Kenya, private security is regulated by the Private Security Regulatory Authority. Working with a compliant provider means trained officers, proper records — and no legal risk for your organisation.

The law in brief

What the Private Security Regulation Act requires.

The Act

The Private Security Regulation Act, 2016 (No. 13 of 2016) governs every company and person that provides private security services in Kenya.

The Authority

The Act created the Private Security Regulatory Authority (PSRA), which registers and licenses security providers and their officers and sets the standards they must meet.

Registration

Security firms must be registered with the Authority, and every officer they deploy must be trained and registered too.

Penalties

The Act provides for fines and imprisonment for providing security services without registration — and for engaging providers who are not registered.

This is a plain-language summary, not legal advice. The full Act and the Authority’s guidance are published by the PSRA.

For clients

Before you hire any security company.

A short checklist we recommend to every client — whoever you choose.

  1. 1Ask the provider for its PSRA registration and licence details, and check them with the Authority.
  2. 2Confirm the officers sent to your site are registered and carry identification.
  3. 3Check that officers are paid properly — underpaid guards are a security risk.
  4. 4Ask about supervision, insurance and how incidents are reported to you.
